Architect Prof. Altaf Ahmed graduated from the School of Architecture and Planning, Madras University in 1965, and gained practical experience in M/s. Prynne, Abbot and Davis, a leading Architectural firm of the time, before joining his Alma mater as a Faculty to start an illustrious career in teaching Architecture. He went abroad in 1980 for a brief stint of five years, designed numerous buildings and established an Architectural firm with Architects from different countries. He has to his credit the distinction of designing villas, shopping malls, hospitals and multi-storied apartments in places such as Jeddah, Mecca, Dammam and Riyadh. Prof. Altaf Ahmed, after returning to India in 1985 started M/s. Altaf Associates which has created several prestigious projects including Housing, Commercial, Hospitals, Hotels and Religious buildings. Prof. Altaf Ahmed was responsible for establishment of the Departments of Architecture as its Dean in M.G.R. University, Chennai. He was also responsible in setting up new architectural colleges such as Aalim Mohd. Saleh Academy of Architecture, Global College of Engg., MNM Jain Engg. College to name a few. MEASI Academy of Architecture, established in 1999 under the Directorship of Prof. Altaf Ahmed has become one of the best Institutes of Architecture within a span of fifteen years and has seen more than 700 students graduating. While most of them are successfully practising and working in different parts of the world, some have also been inspired to take up teaching as their career and that they have high respect for him is a testimony to his being a successful teacher. One of the leadership qualities of Prof. Altaf Ahmed, besides being a teacher, is to have an eye for identifying the best teaching talent and absorbing them into teaching career including several practicing architects as visiting faculty. The secret behind Prof. Altaf Ahmed's success is that of fixing a higher benchmark even when the students excel and gain laurels. He has a strong view that students should not only be well exposed and talented but also have maturity and ethical values. Prof. Altaf Ahmed's passion for teaching and extensive practical experience provided him a unique opportunity to bring in real life experience to the classroom for the benefit of the students. Prof. Altaf Ahmed's vision for teaching, which is not confined to class room alone, is evident from the fact that he has made valuable contribution as Chairman, Board of Examinations, Member Syllabus Committee, Member - Board of Studies - Anna University, Member Board of Architectural Education - The Indian Institute of Architects and Convenor of Inspection Committee for Council of Architecture. Throughout his life, Prof. Altaf Ahmed has been a dedicated academician, extremely sincere in his profession and a man of principles and conviction. He received the following awards: Best Teacher Award by the Indian Institute of Architects - Tamil Nadu - 2011. Fountainhead Lifetime Achievement Award 2012 by Council of Architecture, New Delhi. In recognition and appreciation of his outstanding contribution to the field of Architectural Education, The Indian Institute of Architects presented the IIA Madhav Achwal Gold Medal 2016 to Ar. Prof. Altaf Ahmed on December 1, 2016 at the IIA National Convention held at Bengaluru.
